Parent Consultation - Relationship & Sex Education – The Galfrid School 

At The Galfrid School our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) curriculum is designed to teach children to become responsible, healthy, respectful, contributing, aspirational, moral members of British society. Children’s personal and social development is interlinked in all areas of school life.   

Our curriculum intent sets out the school’s vision to develop the whole child and their individual talents and teach them the skills they need to become active and economically self-sufficient citizens.    

Our curriculum teaches children essential skills for life such as cooperation, teamwork, resilience and respect for others and the environment.    

Delivering an ‘education with character’ is the foundation of all we do. Children are encouraged to develop new talents and qualities unique to them and to express themselves clearly and articulately. We believe that it is vital to facilitate our children to develop the values and skills they need to become compassionate and driven leaders of the future. Our curriculum is designed to give children knowledge and understanding of where they are from but also of where they could go.    

We teach children about equality, diversity and what healthy relationships look like and what this means for society. By teaching children the importance of British Values, we will teach them to become independent and responsible members of our school, the local community and society at large.  


Our Personal and Social development curriculum is structured to include six overarching themes which run throughout school.

• Health and Well Being (including Physical Health & Mental Wellbeing)   

• Growing and Changing (including Relations and Sex Education Curriculum)    

• Living in the wider world (including citizenship)   

All of these units are embedded into three over-arching themes taught throughout the year.

At The Galfrid School we are committed to developing an education with character through our Pupil Charter which is designed to give children a range of experiences that extend beyond the National Curriculum. These experiences celebrate the richness of the local community, as well as the wider world and provide children with opportunities to learn first-hand from experts and develop their imaginations which raise aspirations and create new possibilities.    

Through assemblies and class time, children learn about the achievements and life stories of inspirational people from Britain and the wider world, giving them opportunities to see what is possible and to learn that with hard work and determination, dreams can be achieved. 

We recognise that PSHE is best taught by adults who know our children well. PSHE will primarily be taught by the class teacher every week, or where topics may be suited to double sessions PSHE may be taught fortnightly.  Lessons may be supported by other members of staff where appropriate.


Children have the ability to be reflective about their own beliefs (religious or otherwise) and perspective on life. They have knowledge of, and respect for, different people’s faiths, feelings and values. They have a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them.   

Children use their imaginations and creativity in their learning and have a willingness to reflect on their own experiences.  Children participate in and respond positively to artistic, musical, sporting and cultural opportunities.   

Children are able to recognise the difference between right and wrong and are able to apply this understanding in their own lives. They have respect for the law of England, a strong understanding of right and wrong and can reflect on the consequences of their behaviour and actions.    

Children are confident working and socialising with other pupils, including those from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.  They value what we have in common, as well as what makes us different.  They have a genuine willingness to participate in a variety of community events through volunteering, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively.   

Children have a good understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.  All children are provided with the opportunity to be leaders within their classroom, influencing change. Children have an understanding and appreciation of the range of different cultures in the school and further afield (local, national and global communities) which is an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain.   

Our PSHE curriculum is also planned in a way which promotes the cultural capital of all our children. We enhance our curriculum especially for the most disadvantaged by organising guest speakers and visitors and by organising and celebrating key occasions that promote children’s emotional, social and metal wellbeing. We also provide additional opportunities through our Pupil Charter listing all of the key experiences our children will have participated in before they leave The Galfrid School.
